Notes (return to top ↑)
- The purpose of this list is to give you a good feel for all the history books published in hardback in the UK. It is a reasonably exhaustive list butโฆ
- The list is limited to books which are sold on Amazon.co.uk. This means that some publishers that donโt sell on Amazon will be missed but the vast majority are included.
- It also uses the date published (for the hardback version of the book) entered onto Amazon.co.uk to determine the publication year.
- Books shown roughly in date published order, with the ones we have reviewed put right to the top.
- I have excluded military history books which I see as a category all on its own (and would if included have swamped the non-military history books).
- I have excluded history books that I see as too โlocalโ eg the many books on particular aspects of the US Civil War, or the many books focussing on relatives of medieval English kings.
- The filter is an OR filter within categories and an AND filter between categories. For example if you select ๐ 2021 and ๐ 2022 books from both years will be shown - 2021 OR 2022...
- ...but if you select ๐ 2021 and ๐ Political then only books that have both attributes will be shown - 2021 AND Political. I think this is intuitively what most people expect to happen!
- The little ๐ and ๐ buttons to the top right of the filter allow you to: ๐→ toggle between small (default) and larger covers for the books; and to: ๐→ toggle between showing all books (default), only reviewed books, or only not-reviewed books - this last one only really of use if you are yourself a reviewer for this site!
- This page has been written by myself, learning html, css and javascript in the process. Please therefore excuse any quirks or oddities that you may come across...
- Also bear in mind that the history book database is hand-curated - the categories for the books are chosen by me... This means they can't be manipulated to boost sales ("hey my book is in *all* the categories!") but also that I have to use my judgement where there is ambiguity.
- This page is written within and deployed by โจGlitchโจ - a brilliant service for learning and experimenting with small scale apps like this one.
- It also uses the excellent open source css framework ๐ halfmoon ๐ - most of the fancy bits owe a large debt of gratitude to the halfmoon team!
- I have also swapped out the standard emoji characters that your system will display by default with the Twitter emoji pictures, through the open source project ๐ฆ Twemoji ๐ฆ - because I think they look great, and also because it is a good way of showing little flag icons.
